The Voice is getting an edge: Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong is filling the rocker-mentor role on the NBC show, the network announced Thursday.

In a statement, the vocalist/guitarist talked up his new gig (and maybe gave a little dig at the reality singing show competition?) The Voice is "not molding artists, it's just giving them a little bit of guidance and direction without giving them a complete makeover." Not to mention, pulling up a swivel chair next to Christina Aguilera is "a lot of fun."

Armstrong started taping for season 3 on Wednesday.
