It isn’t everyday that you meet a seasoned health practitioner who is not only gifted in the expertise of Healthy Living but also one who exudes an excitement and appreciation for her craft like Kshamica MD. After conducting an initial interview with her, I feel it my duty as a responsible journalist to pen this article.
Kshamica Nimalasuriya MD, MPH is a Preventive Medicine Physician dedicated to improving the health status of people as well as reduce health disparities. She is unique in that her method involves merging Media with Health, Open-Source Education, Herbal Medicine, Fitness, Nutrition, and Wellness.
She works on many initiatives to expand health care education. She is a delightful human being with a passion for helping individuals evolve in their experience of optimum wellness.
In addition to her life role in preventive medicine, she has a flare for fashion, fun, and is essentially a true people person. She gained her excitement for healthy living from her mentor, her dad, a professional physician.
In our interview, she referred to him as “a wonderful man and a very good physician”. It is evident that his role went beyond parenting and into the area of a true role model and mentor that ultimately led her to her own self-discovery in the area of her passion for wellness and healthy living.
She shared that she discovered her purpose during the time that she was working in an ICU unit as a resident. It was during that time that one day in particular she had a mental awakening that many of the hospital patients who she cared for ultimately had conditions that could have been prevented.
Many of the conditions were a result of repetitive, unhealthy habits of living such as improper eating habits, over consumption of non nutrition based foods, beverages, etc. that lead to the patients arriving for healthcare to treat physical ailments and weakened body systems. This life-changing awakening catapulted her into committing her personal efforts and energies into Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
Since that time, Kshamica has created an array of exciting organic and natural products for the purpose of enhancing healthy living. Her consultations are vivacious and rejuvenating in tone where individuals can experience not only her joy for helping others but also a multifaceted array of natural products that assist in the purification and renewal of a balanced body machine.
Rather than rewrite her thoughts on this topic, I feel that it is vital that I present excerpts of our exciting interview in such a way to provide you with her innovative yet simple methods of how we can enjoy life at optimum nutritional and energy levels.
SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH AND NUTRITION: KSHAMICA MD
Did you know growing up that you would become a practitioner?
Yes, I knew I would do something relating to health.
Is it true that we are what we eat? What foods do you think contribute to healthy skin, hair and overall wellness?
Yes, we are what we eat. There are so many foods that contribute to healthy skin, hair and overall wellness. Here are a few of them:
- Spinach - the dark green leafy vegetable is a great source of vitamin B, C, and E, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium and
omega-3 fatty acids. It's also full of lutein, which keep your eyes healthy
- Blueberries -- one of the fruits highest in antioxidants, great for anti-aging
- Tomatoes are the best source of the anti-aging antioxidant lycopene.
- Walnuts - are high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E. The benefits of walnuts include smoother skin, healthy hair, brighter eyes, and strong.
- Kiwis - loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants, which keep skin firm, help prevent wrinkles, and are great for healthy bones and teeth.
- Dark chocolate - helps skin stay hydrated and protects skin from sun damage
- Sweet potatoes are packed with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that fights aging.
Many of us are on truly fast paced schedules with little time to cook. Fast food has become a habit of consumption that for the most part is a quick fix to curb our appetites. How can we change our eating habits in terms of ways we can plan our meals that take into consideration a minimum time for preparation and at the same time receive the optimum nutritional results for our bodies?
It takes minutes to prepare a variety of fruit salads, vegetable salads that are tasty and nutritious. They are quick to prepare and provide instant energy for our bodies. Pure nutrition in every bite.
Whether we know it or not, just like a car needs a tune up after so many miles of driving, we as human beings need to tune up our body machines to experience optimum energy levels and overall wellness. I’ve read in various nutritional magazines about the fact that we as humans can benefit ourselves through a gentle detox to purify our body machines.
What is a detox and why is it essential to our well being?
Over time, toxins accumulate in our bodies. These can be from the environment, from things we put in or on our bodies, or from our bodies themselves.
FOOD: Processed foods, genetically modified foods, food additives, food dyes and flavorings (MSG, aspartame). Even alcohol and wine have sulfites. All these are toxins.
AIR: Carbon dioxide and methane from air pollution. Car and factory emissions. First and second hand smoke.
WATER: Yes, water has been shown to have ammonia, bleach, chlorine, chromium and additional pollutants in it.
CHEMICALS. Mercury from the fish. OTC, prescription and recreational drugs that build up over time. Bisphenol A and phalates from plastic water bottles. And here it is, all the pestiside residue from fruits and vegetables.
Once toxins accumulate in our bodies they are able to disrupt cellular function, and this shows up in various health conditions such as chronic fatigue, erectile dysfunction, thyroiditis, acne, vision issues. Eventually the toxins build up and contribute to chronic diseases such as kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, skin issues, autoimmune disorders, and liver diseases, to name a few.
Of course we know that health conditions are usually caused by more than one factor. There’s our lifestyle, our environment, and our genetics. However, no matter what your genetics are and what your lifestyle or environment is, an accumulation of toxins is never a good thing.
What do you suggest in terms of a way to treat ourselves to an overall detox or body tune up with the goals that we are giving ourselves a gentle cleanse from head to toe internally as well as to boost energy levels and our overall feeling of purifying our body machine?
There is a product that I use that I have received so many complements on. It’s called the Tru Body Cleanse. The Tru Body Cleanse is a great product for so many reasons. It's a 100% natural herbal cleanse and the results I've seen from it continue to amaze me.
The Cleanse changes peoples lives. That's not what I'm saying, that's what people tell me. It's usually one of the best experiences they've ever had. Some of the effects of the Cleanse include: • More resilient skin and complexion
• Weight reduction/release (10-40 pounds)
• Enhanced energy levels
• Enhanced and clearer sense of being and mental clarity
• Enhanced immunity throughout the year
• More normalized and regulated body functions
• Eradication of cravings (especially sugar, junk food, etc.)

What do you recommend for food consumption during a detox? During a full body cleanse you want your body to have to work as little as possible, yet have enough reserves to complete your activities of daily living. So your diet should be composed of mainly vegetables and fruits, and should essentially be a raw diet. After all, animal foods, grains and legumes are harder to digest.
To prepare for your cleanse about 1 week before I would get your body on the right path. This means eliminating alcohol, salt, sugar and artificial sweeteners, and animal products including dairy.
If you want to start your cleanse right away, just know that if you regularly eat or drink these products you might experience withdrawal symptoms such as headaches and lightheadedness during the first few days of your cleanse.
During the cleanse taking natural herbs puts in good nutrients while the body is detoxing. This allows the herbs to work to their full potential and deliver the positive effects they express.
During your detox and after you will feel rejuvenated and refreshed. Most people feel lighter and younger. Many people find improvements in their health conditions.
Don’t forget maintenance. Whether you are actively on your cleanse or not, it’s important to always be cognizant of what toxins you are exposing your body to, and what toxins you can reduce or eliminate from your life.
As a successful entrepreneur in Preventive Medicine, share with us your vision and what you plan to create with the growing demand of your business today. I want to continue my work with the goal to build communities centered on health and wellness where we continue to educate people on natural ways to help themselves. This is my joy.
Thank you for your commitment and passion to helping us all grow in our efforts of self-care and our own evolution of understanding of what our bodies need vs. what we think we need. It’s been a pleasure. I plan to make a few changes in my intake as a result of this interview. I’ll definitely try your suggestion for salad preparations.
Thank you.
