Bentley Continental Evolution of an Icon – The Movie
New film features 16MY Continental GT Speed and R-Type Continental
Traces the DNA and design of the Continental from 1952 to present
16MY GT Speed is the fastest production car ever made by Bentley
The Bentley Continental GT is one of the most iconic cars on the road today. The Continental name first entered the company’s lexicon in 1952 with the R-Type Continental – arguably the world’s first Grand Tourer.
With a top speed of 120 mph it was the fastest four-seater in the world at the time of its launch. Many of the 208 examples produced were coachbuilt by Mulliner – a name that is still closely associated with Bentley to this day.
With just three strokes of the designer’s pen, the shape of the Continental comes to life – the striking power line, muscular rear haunches and swooping, fast roof line. These three elegant styling cues have remained a fundamental part of the Continental’s DNA over six decades.
Today’s Continental elegantly fulfils the same grand-touring brief as its forebear. With immense W12 power, a top speed of 206 mph and an unsurpassed ability to cross continents in total comfort, the Continental GT Speed is a truly extraordinary car.

Range Rover SVR Arctic Drive with Explorer Ben Saunders
RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR TAKES ON ARCTIC SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT CARVED ONTO FROZEN LAKE
Full-scale replica Silverstone ice circuit carved on frozen Lake Udjaur, in Sweden
Polar explorer Ben Saunders drives thrilling Range Rover Sport SVR around Arctic circuit
Land Rover Experience Instructor and former rally champion Minna Sillankorva demonstrates ice driving techniques
Range Rover Sport SVR is the fastest and most powerful Range Rover
Land Rover Ambassador and polar explorer, Ben Saunders, swapped his snowshoes for winter tyres to put the Range Rover Sport SVR through its paces at a unique yet familiar test track near the Arctic Circle.
A new film released by Land Rover charts the world famous adventurer’s journey from ice driving novice to experienced veteran in Arjeplog, Sweden, on a full-scale replica of the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit carved in the snow on Lake Udjaur.
With instruction from Land Rover Experience instructor and former rally champion, Finland’s Minna Sillankorva, Ben tackles the unique challenge of driving on ice behind the wheel of Land Rover’s performance flagship, the 550PS Range Rover Sport, complete with its thrilling V8 soundtrack.
Range Rover Sport SVR is the fastest and most powerful Land Rover to date, capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. It is the first model to wear the SVR designation which will be adopted by future Land Rover and Jaguar high performance models.
Ben Saunders, who has led expeditions to both the North and South Poles, said: “Obviously, I had an amazing day. It was my first time driving on ice and the most fun I’ve had on four-wheels. The performance of the Range Rover Sport SVR is simply breathtaking and its poise in the corners was astounding given the slippery conditions.”
Ben’s experience was aided by a sophisticated suite of features to enhance all-terrain performance, including the latest generation of Land Rover’s advanced Terrain Response®2 system, which automatically tailors a range of vehicle settings to suit the conditions. In addition, permanent four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, and a 50/50 percent torque split front-to-rear delivers Land Rover’s trademark capability.
Furthermore, optimum traction is maintained with the aid of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the centre differential, this distributes torque between the front and rear axles – up to 100 percent can be channelled to either axle in extreme conditions, and the Dynamic Active Rear Locking Differential ensures torque is transferred to the rear wheel with most traction, increasing agility.
Another system working to help Ben was Land Rover’s Torque Vectoring by Braking system uses the SVR’s brakes to imitate the effect of a torque-vectoring differential, constantly balancing the distribution of engine torque between all four wheels during cornering, for improved grip and steering responses, to reduce understeer.
This system monitors the vehicle via the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) module. As it accelerates through a corner, the system uses yaw sensors to detect the onset of understeer. Imperceptible levels of braking are then used to correct the path of the vehicle, while engine torque is transferred to the outside wheels, to maintain traction and steering control.
Mike Cross, Chief Engineer Vehicle Integrity, said: “We pride ourselves on the all-terrain capability and composure of our vehicles, putting them through intensive hot and cold climate testing. The Range Rover Sport SVR is the most dynamic model we’ve ever produced and combining these qualities showcases the unique talents and expertise of our dedicated engineers.”

The Bentley Continental GT Speed Vmax in the Outback
Continental GT Speed hits 206 mph (331 km/h) top speed on Stuart Highway, Australia
Northern Territory route one of only three derestricted roads in the world
Australian racing legend, John Bowe, takes Grand Tourer on extraordinary high-speed run
Continental GT Speed combines supercar performance with supreme luxury
The 16MY Bentley Continental GT Speed has been taken to its top speed of 206 mph (331 km/h)* by Australian racing legend, John Bowe, on the derestricted Stuart Highway** deep in the Northern territory.
The 635 PS (626 bhp), 820 Nm (607 lb.ft) W12-powered GT Speed Grand Tourer reached Vmax in just 76 seconds, covering a distance of 9.4 kilometres in the process. At top speed, the 6.0-litre twin-turbo Grand Tourer was covering a staggering 92 metres (or one football pitch) per second.
John Bowe said: “This isn’t a modified racecar; it’s a luxurious grand touring road car fresh off the production line. It took us a little over a minute to go from a standstill to 206 mph. That’s extraordinary. Even when you break through the 200 mph barrier, the GT Speed just keeps accelerating.”
The Stuart Highway covers a distance of 1,761 miles (2,834 km) from Darwin in the Northern Territory to Port Augusta, South Australia – approximately the same distance as London to Istanbul or New York to Denver. In October 2013 the local Government announced a trial period of reverting to an open speed limit on the 120-mile (200 km) stretch between Alice Springs and Barrow Creek.
At Vmax the 16MY Bentley Continental GT Speed is circulating 216 litres of coolant through its engine and radiator per minute; drawing over 4,700 litres of air through its radiator each second; and using 80 per cent of its engine power just to overcome aerodynamic loads.
A six-time Australian touring car and two-time Bathurst 1,000 champion, John Bowe was the perfect choice of driver for Bentley’s high-speed run in the ‘Red Centre’. He is also familiar with the Continental as he currently races a GT3 Down Under with Flying B Racing.

Volvo (Driverless) Concept 26 – Ordinary Becomes Extraordinary
VOLVO CARS UNVEILS CONCEPT 26, DELIVERING THE LUXURY OF TIME
Volvo Cars’ ongoing research into autonomous driving has confirmed what we all know – that the daily commute is taking the joy out of driving. It is during the commute and on long motorway trips that people are most willing to delegate the act of driving to their car.
With this in mind, Volvo has developed Concept 26, named to reflect the average daily commute to work of 26 minutes* – time that could be spent doing something more meaningful than sitting in stop-start traffic. Volvo has set out to bring choice and freedom back to the driver; to enjoy the driving experience when they want to, or to delegate driving to the car when they want to do something else.
Drive, Create, Relax
“It’s all about people. Our research clearly shows that some people will want to use their commuting time creatively when they have full autonomous drive available, while others will want to just sit back and relax, watch online media or listen to music. Autonomous drive will make all of this possible. This is what Concept 26 has captured by reimagining the entire car experience,” said Robin Page, Vice President of Interior Design at Volvo Cars.
Concept 26 is based around an all-new patented seat design that actively cradles the driver during the transformation phase into one of the three modes: Drive, Create or Relax. With these three modes the concept creates a new autonomous drive innovation platform that can adapt to new needs and technologies over time.
When the driver wishes to delegate driving to the car, the steering wheel retracts, the seat reclines and a large display emerges from the dashboard allowing the driver to enjoy the time spent in the car as they like. Concept 26 embraces the need for radical change of the basic design of car interiors and provides a space that can be used as the driver/passenger wishes.
Concept 26 opens up a new paradigm of possibilities in the car – from entertainment to service provision and beyond, using the technology that is now a natural part of our everyday lives. It also signals the huge potential for new business opportunities and high-tech collaborations that autonomous drive will bring.
